Traveling from Seattle to the Hood Canal

Depending on your starting point in the greater Seattle area, you’ll have a few options for traveling to the Hood Canal region, each offering its own unique experience. One option is to take the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, or Edmonds to Kingston. This scenic journey provides breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Keep in mind that you’ll need to drive your car onto the ferry and continue driving from there.

Alternatively, driving directly allows for flexibility, enabling you to explore scenic routes and make pit stops as desired. It’s important to note that ferry services can experience high demand, especially during peak summer season and weekends. For us, we often opt to take the ferry over early in the morning and drive the entire way for the return trip.

Go For a Hike

If you’re looking to spend time in nature while visiting the Hood Canal, there are several great hikes you won’t want to miss, including Rocky Brook Falls, Staircase Rapids, and Lena Lake (listed below in order from easiest to harder).

Rocky Brook Falls (Dogs allowed, no pass required)
With a walk lasting only about 200 yards, the adventure to Rocky Brook Falls is extremely short and totally worth it. Just be careful on the rocks around the base of the falls – they’re extremely slippery even in hiking boots! More Info

Staircase Rapids (No dogs allowed, National Park Pass required)
The Staircase Rapids loop trail on the Olympic Peninsula is a must-do. At just 2.1 miles and 574 feet of elevation gain, Staircase Rapids is a beautiful, family-friendly hike near Hoodsport featuring vibrant moss, roaring rapids, and an iconic suspension bridge. More Info

Lena Lake (Dogs allowed, Northwest Forest Pass required)
At 7.2 miles with 1,300 feet of elevation gain, this is the longest hike near Hoodsport on our list, but it’s quite gradual and doable for most hikers, passing through the forest and ending overlooking the beautiful Lena Lake. More Info

Visit the Nation’s Highest Railroad Bridge – High Steel Bridge in Shelton, WA

Built in 1929 and standing 365 feet high above the South Fork of the Skokomish River, the High Steel Bridge is a dizzying experience worth a visit. We wouldn’t classify this as a hike, but you can walk across the bridge and take in the gorgeous views, including a waterfall flowing down below.

Kayak and Watch for Wildlife on the Waters of Hood Canal

Kayaking in Hood Canal offers a serene way to explore the region’s natural beauty, with the option to bring your own kayak or rent from local outfitters. At Mike’s Beach Resort, where we stayed (more info below), guests can conveniently rent kayaks and launch straight from the resort’s shores. Keep an eye out for seals, otters, and the occasional sea lion during your paddle. We had an exciting encounter when a curious sea lion came within just 20 feet of our kayak!

This place may look unassuming, but trust us – Halfway House Restaurant in Brinnon has some of the best pie we’ve ever had! We opted for the Marionberry – a la mode, of course. Word on the street is they have an awesome breakfast too. We’ll be trying that next time for sure!
